City Issues Electrical Aggregation Reminder
The City of Aurora is reminding residents and small business owners of how the recently approved electrical aggregation program operates.
Officials are reinforcing that residents do not have to do a thing in order to take advantage of the program, which will save the average household an estimated 25 percent monthly – or $300 per year – on their electric bills beginning in August.
On May 24, the Aurora City Council approved First Energy Solutions as the City’s new electrical supplier. First Energy’s bid of 4.71 cents per kilowatt hour is well below Commonwealth Edison's (ComEd) current average summer rate of 7.03 cents and non-summer rate of 8.53 cents. First Energy’s rate is good for two years, the term of the contract signed with the City, and is expected to result in an estimated $30 million savings for Aurorans in that timeframe.
Residents and business owners in Aurora’s Electrical Aggregation Program will continue to receive a single monthly bill from ComEd (ComEd), which will maintain power lines and distribute the electricity. Customers also will continue to call ComEd in the event of service interruptions.
A mailing will be going out next week for customers wishing to opt-out of the aggregation program if they so desire. After the new rates become effective, ComEd will send a switch notice giving customers a second opportunity to rescind and opt-out. Those opting out will continue to receive their electricity from ComEd or an alternative supplier of their choosing. If a resident or small business owner is solicited by an alternative electrical supplier other than First Energy, they are urged to closely examine the electrical rate being offered and the terms of any proposed contracts.
First Energy is the only electrical supplier currently endorsed by the City of Aurora. More information is available from First Energy at 866-636-3749.
