Aurora Fire Department 2009 Firefighter Qualifications

The City of Aurora will be testing for firefighter applicants in the fall of 2009. Mandatory orientation is scheduled for Friday, September 18, 2009 at 7 p.m. (Doors will open at 6 p.m.) A written exam will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 8 a.m. (Doors will open at 7 a.m.) Both will be held at West Aurora High School, 1201 W. New York Street, Aurora, IL 60506. If you are interested in applying, please read the following as our requirements have changed.

You must meet the following qualifications in order to take the entrance examination:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be 20 years of age and less than 35 years of age by the date of the written exam.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and less than 35 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Must possess a valid class “D” Illinois driver’s license prior to appointment and at the time of testing must present same, or a valid out-of-state driver’s license of similar classification.
  • Must be able to meet vision requirements at time of appointment. Correctable to 20/20 with both eyes open, field of vision, depth perception, color vision.
  • Must be able to certify as Paramedic (EMT-P)
  • Must have ability to obtain certification as EMT-B/D or I.
  • Must have excellent moral character and personal integrity.
  • Must be CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) certified by time of written exam. The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) is a pre-employment test developed in cooperation between the International Association of Firefighters and the International Association of Fire Chiefs and is comprised of a comprehensive orientation, preparation and testing program. Individuals may register and take part in CPAT Pre-Certification for use in fire department hiring processes and receive CPAT Identification Card upon successful completion of the test. Testing fee paid for by individual candidates will be approx. $110. Applications will become available starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2009 and will end at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2009.

If you’re interested in joining our department, print out, fully complete and mail the City of Aurora Application For Employment, Recruitment Survey (both are located under the Application Process in the Human Resources tab) and the Application Deadline Agreement. There is a non-refundable $20 application fee—please pay by money order, certified check or cashier’s check made out to “City of Aurora.” Personal checks will not be accepted. Do not send cash through the mail. If you are applying in person, you must obtain an Application Voucher from the Human Resources Department and pay the application fee in cash or by credit card in the City Hall lobby. You must also provide a copy of your birth certificate to verify your age, a copy of your high school diploma/G.E.D, and a copy of your valid driver’s license when turning in application. Your CPAT certification will need to be copied and turned in at the written exam (No copies will be made at the written exam). All application documents must be received no later than September 1, 2009. Completed applications must be postmarked no later than September 1, 2009, or submitted by 5:00 p.m. on September 1, 2009. The Aurora Fire Department tests for firefighters every two years. Once applicants have passed the written exam, they will be placed on an eligibility list which will remain in effect for two years. In 2009, our test dates will be September 18 and 19th. All testing will take place at West Aurora High School, which is located at 1201 W. New York St., Aurora, IL 60506 (see the attached maps). Orientation will take place on Friday, September 18, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. The written test will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the Student Cafeteria. Late admittance will not be allowed.
